New words from unexpected places

So... I'd intended to do an entry right after going to the NY Botanical Gardens' annual Orchid Show, featuring some of my lovely closeups (I say lovely in all modesty, because it's difficult to take an UNlovely picture of an orchid). A couple of weeks passed, and then it was time for the Philadelphia Flower Show, also source of many many flower pictures and good blog fodder. But... sigh. Formatting pics always takes me awhile, and I have been singularly uninspired to do actual *work* in my evenings, and so instead you get a wimpy little "two new words" post instead of a big, luscious "two new flower shows" post. Yeah, yeah, at least you don't have to stare at a blank blog anymore, all four of you.

So anyway... yes, I am supposedly a grown woman in my thirties. No, I am *not* particularly fond of the romance genre. And yet, I play Neopets, which is very silly and childish (and seems to have an awful *lot* of grownups on it for such a silly game), and I have found myself lately addicted to the novels of Julia Quinn (who *gasp* has astounding things like plot and character development and... dare I whisper it? HUMOR in her romances!).

(As a side note, lest it be said that I turn up my nose at romances all-unknowing, my mother reads them incessantly and makes me feed her habit every few weeks with fresh titles. She generally doesn't care what I bring, as long as it's a romance, which I think supports my thesis of the, er, bland interchangability of the genre. I do occasionally pick up an interesting-looking title without *too* much bare flesh on the cover with the thought that, well, maybe I'm being unfair, they can't ALL be that bad. Thanks to Ms. Quinn I can now say that no, they're *not* all that bad. Just 99.8% of them. There. Disgustingly long paranthetical remark over. Go on, go about your business, next paragraph.)

And just yesterday, I came across not one, but TWO words I didn't recognize from those sources. From Neopets I got edacious (as in the edacious mutant Chia, Florg! FEED FLORG! FEE-- er. ahem. Pray excuse me. *coughs lightly*). And in the pages of Julia Quinn's The Duke and I, I found delope (as in, "Anthony is so furious. I don't think he'll delope.").

So, there you are. Proof that, even in the most unexpected of places, a good dictionary can come in handy.

Well if you've any interest in another romance author or two who fit that criteria (there are a few more) let me know and I can recommend a couple.

Oh, by all means, please. As I'm one book away from finishing reading all of the Quinn books.

Hey, Magda! It's great to hear from you again. ^_^ I admit, I'm not head-over-heels excited to leap into the romance genre for its own sake, but I'm always looking for a good new author or five. :)

Don't have time this second, but drop me an email and we can catch up, eh?

BTW, if you do a google search for "Magdalena's Cakes" you should be able to see much of what I've been up to for the past few years.
