Man Arrested for Wearing 'Give Peace a Chance' t-shirt

"We don't care what they have on their shirts, but they were asked to leave the property, and it's private property," Murley said.

That's the bit that gets me... I don't get this. The NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade can ban the gay and lesbian groups from marching with them in a public parade on city streets because of freedom of religion... but mall security can censor free speech in the public forum of a mall because it's private property? Next thing they should do is post "POSTED: NO TRESSPASSING OF PEACE ACTIVISTS" on their doors.

Oooh...::Grissy has a sudden evil thought for a letter to the editor of the Albany Times-Union...::

From what I've read, the law is on the mall's side in this. Malls are private properrty, and can ask people to leave if they don't want them there, for a wide range of reasons.

I'm certainly not saying that I *like* this, but it's legally permissible. What's probably happening is the mall is run by a gung-ho type who wants us to hurry up and start bombing the brown people, and has made the stipulation that anti-war clothing or such are grounds for removal from the mall.

What *should* happen is a boycott of the mall by people who oppose what happened. It won't however, because most people would rather not inconvenience themselves by shopping elsewhere, and will complain amongst themselves that, yes, it's really not right what happened to that man, but the nearest [insert store here] after the one in the mall is forty-five minutes away, and really, what difference can *I* make...

Or, the mall could get *deluged* by protesters...

AHA! So they finally *admitted*, at least, that there's a standing policy to ask ppl wearing no-war slogans to leave.

(Y'know, Pyramid owns the big mall close to me, too...)
