Another Brilliant Idea
Penny

"Her ears look okay," the doctor said. "Just to make sure they stay that way, so fluid doesn't get back in them while they're finishing healing, give her a dose of Triaminic Cold and Allergy every night before bed for the next week or so."

Got the Triaminic yesterday. Well, the generic equivalent thereof.

Penny went to sleep early - at 7. Matt and I shrugged and put her to bed.

She woke up a little after 8, crying. Which sometimes happens if we put her to bed before it really starts to get dark. We picked her up and took her back downstairs, assuming she'd be awake then until 9 or 10. She was asleep again in 20 minutes.

Whoo!

We went to bed.

She woke up at 11:30, crying.

She woke up at 1:30, crying.

At 2:15. (Matt is apparently not sufficiently soothing at 2am. She screamed until I took her, then quieted instantly. Great.)

She didn't wake up this frequently as a newborn, even.

Damn you, Triaminic.

And then they said...

Coda: She didn't get up again until nearly 7, thank the gods. But that only underscores my suspicion that it was the Triaminic making her wake up. Damned if I'm going to do this for the next week.

Wait... I'm confused. Doesn't cold medicine make you sleepy? Whaddafu?

If you read carefully the warnings on most antihistamines, you'll note that they often have contradictory messages, to wit: "May cause drowsiness. May cause exciteability, especially in young children."

Though actually what I think is happening (dammit, I can't wait until Penny can talk...) is that she's waking up a little - as most people do several times over the course of a night - and the weird lightheaded/dizzy feeling that comes with the use of a decongestant/antihistamine is making things seem weird, so instead of half-opening an eye and dropping back off to sleep, she gets scared and starts crying.

But of course I don't know that for sure. I don't even know that it's the fault of the medicine, for sure, except that it's the only deviation from our usual routine that we had last night.

BLEH. My condolences... and I wound up having a taste of the same, last night. Mom and Dad came back from France with horrible colds they developed in their last few days there (Mom said the pressure changes on the plane were so painful she was worried her eardrums would *really* pop). Dad's a heavy snorer even when he's healthy, and my mom's turned allergic to one of the main OTC decongestents, so between the honking and the wracking coughs and the snoring... >_
